Question Dispensary Assistant Course Module 4

    Hi.
I need too finish this module today, but i got two questions left.
    I got prescription for co-amoviclav tabs 250/125 tds 21
And the question is:If the prescription had been written as Augmentin tabs 250125 rather than co-amoxiclav 250/125 could you dispense this and why?

    And second question is.
    I got prescription for co-amilofruse 2.5/20mg tabs 1om 60.
Would you be paid for dispensing Frumil LS tabs against the prescription for co-amilofruse?Explain your answer.

Please help with this last two question.
I think in second question i will not be paid for Frumil LS but why?

Because if you look in Drug tariff it is a Category M which means its readily available and you get paid manufacturers price. To be paid for a brand must be Cat C which are not readily available as generic.
For the Augmentin question is it a dental prescription? If so Augmentin is not on Formulery so should not be prescribed, but co-amoxiclav is.
    Hope that helps

    Hi Lilly,
The price we get paid for items is dictated by the Dept of Health & listed in the Drug Tariff. If a drug is only readily available as a brand then we get reimbursed the cost of a brand- i.e. Candesartan & Amias. If it is easily available as a generic then we will only get paid that price which is often a lot less than a brand. At the beginnning of the Drug Tariff it lists the different categories. Co-amilofruse 2.5/20 is a cat M so we get reimbursed the standard Manufactorers price for a generic. If you then dispensed Frumil LS the dispensary would lose money. Ok to do as a 1 off, but obviously bad for business as you are working at a loss.
The question about Augmentin is again about brands & the formularies. The Dental Formulary is a list which states what is allowed to be prescribed on a dental prescription. Dentits are not meant to prescribe by brand unless it is specifically listed in the formulary. Therefore if you dispensed a prescription for Augmentin & sent it off to the PPD it would be returned & you would not be paid. If it was written as co-amoxiclav then you could dispense it as it is on the Formulary.
I hope that clarifies it, but if not please let me know,
    Ginny

Only items listed in the Dental Prescribing Formulary (Part XVIIA of the Drug Tariff) can be prescribed on Form FP10 (D). Although the Dental Formulary displays products by their generic titles and dentists are strongly encouraged to prescribe generically, a product may be ordered on Form FP10 (D) by its brand name providing that the brand is not listed in Part XVIIIA of the Drug Tariff (the blacklist).
