    Paying for your own training?

    Hi,
Just wanted to ask if anyone knows if its permitted for you to put yourself through the NVQ3 course. Am having difficulty getting my employer to pay for it due to budgeting issues, and am really keen to progress.
I would be working in a pharmacy full time as a dispenser whilst doing the course, and would have the support of my pharmacist.
Have been studying for it since September, and just want to get on with it now and get it completed.
    Many thanks x

They will not worry who pays. Your employer could claim the VAT and against TAx, probably could also receive youth training allowance. He will probably ask you to pay and give him the receipt so that he can claim without having paid anything. Or am I a cynic?

Re: Paying for your own training?

I asked the company that I did my NVQ2 course with, but they said they were a member company and I couldnt do it with them (that was the NPA). So I didnt know if you could only do these things through your employer.
I work for a big company (Rowlands) and at first they said my area would be enrolled in June, now its become March 2012, and I dont want to wait that long. The other colleague I work with has been trying to get on the course for 9 years!! And she's still not been able to do it. I dont want to be in that situation.
So its pay for it myself (if they'll let me) or change jobs.
Thanks for your post though, I hope you're right.

I know, i've thought about that and I don't have any answers, but I dont want to wait years to progress. They promised I would be enrolled in June and even told me I was on the list when I rang the training dept in April. But now i'm back to square one and who knows if the same thing won't happen in March next year. Im already 39, I only started workin in pharmacy 2 years ago, I can't keep delaying these things, i'm never going to get anywhere.
Ive thought about moving jobs, but no company is going to put me through NVQ3 until ive worked with them for a while and they know more about me, so I dont know if that route would be any faster. Thats why I thought I would pay for it myself, but you're right, I dont know what that would mean when I finish it. Am not sure what to do for the best.

Re: Paying for your own training?

1 of the reasons i asked was i was told pay for tech would be between 9.15-10.75phr had it on email n my partner deleted email so now have no proof n have just qualified n was offered 8.75phr which i was already on 8.50 so 25p for 2yrs work is not wat i wanted so i managed to get 50p an hr extra which im not too happy about, i get my fees paid for me but i cant claim back the solicitors fees. i would make sure before u go ahead n pay u get things in writing n know exactly what u get out of the deal

Am on less than 7 pounds an hour with NVQ2 qualification, so anything will be better, lol!
Thanks for all your advice though, I really appreciate any suggestions and opinions, as this is all new to me.
    Many thanks x

Hi, I was in the same sitution in a previous job. I offered to do the course and not have a pay rise until another tech left. My employer said the company would not be happy with me doing that because they were not willing/did not deem it fair to pay a qualified tech assistants wages. Hopefully I will get the chance to do it in the future x
