I was just wondering how a Pharmacy stands if someone has been working as a dispenser for over 8 months, but has never done any course (not even Medicine Counter Assistants) and the (non-Pharmacist) Store Manager refuses to put them on a course until another colleague has completed hers. I thought that this was not allowed, however it has gone on so long I'm starting to wonder!
Is this allowed? And if not, who is responsible, is it the RP or the Store Manager?
I don't know who'd be responsible but I used to work in a retail Pharmacy and did the Medicine Counter Assistant training as I was working on the shop floor. The only thing I wasn't happy about was I was never given any time to go through the training booklet and we weren't allowed to take the training folders home just in case someone lost it. After a couple of years we were told to take the test and luckily I passed it (plus it was a multiple choice test).
TInx I would say that this is probably illegal as my understanding is that unless you are trained or on a training programme then you must not be working in the pharmacy, I am a supervisor and do not allow the counter staff in the pharmacy that i work in to dispense (when i am there - although when i am not they probably do dispense) , they do however put the order away sometimes.
If anything was to go wrong i would of thought the pharmacist would be responsible as the majority of companys have sops or policies in place dictating who should and should not be dispensing.
