Hi I know how to compare then but in contrast !!!![]()
That sounds like an exam question from a few years back..."compare and contrast the following" etc...
I looked up the dictionary definition of contrast. It mentions "noting the opposite natures and purposes"....does that help???? Comparing would show how alike things are, contrasting things would show how different they are..............possibly................
Which ADR's have you chosen to look at in depth?? If anyone has a better explanation to help Sueeyre, please please jump in.
I have to compare and contrast type A type B and idiosyncratic but thanks
It might be easier for us to help if we know what ADR's you have chosen.
Type A are augmented reactions, which are predictable from the drug's pharmacology and generally dose dependent, eg sedation with hypnotics and beta blockers causing bradycardia. Because they are dose dependent they are usually reversible on reducing the dose. Because of their predictability they are associated with low mortality. Type B are bizarre effects and aren't generally predictable from the drug's pharmacology are not dose dependent (although there has to be some degree of dose dependency as the reaction doesn't occur until the patient takes the drug). These reactions are often caused by immune or pharmacogenetic reactions. Examples include agranulocytosis with clozapine and TEN with carbamazepine. Because of the unpredictable nature they are almost always associated with high mortality, but the reactions do respond to drug withdrawal (as long as they are picked up early on). Type B and idiosyncratic are the same thing.

What are the similarities and what are the differences.
It is strange that sometimes this forum is happy to do peoples homework questions and sometimes they get a very curt reply![]()
Thank you for your help
....just my opinion
When I'm in the mood I'll try and help where poss - this is a googleable topic though.
A good text on adverse drug reactions is...Adverse Drug Reactions from Pharmpress. The first two chapters are quite useful for gaining a good intro to adr's and their management.
Adverse Drug Reactions
You can access most of it from google books.
