Does anyone know (or have any thoughts about) the minimum age for someone to train as a counter assistant? My 14 year-old nephew hopes to study Medicine eventually and has started working Saturday mornings in my pharmacy (all legal aspects of young workers have been covered ie parental, school and LEA approval, working hours and statutory breaks etc). However, the NPA Interact course isn't available to under 16s (C and D Counterpart doesn't seem to have any age restriction). I have two regular locums, one of whom is happy to work with him, the other is a bit iffy about it. I'll also add that he's probably about four years ahead of where I was at 14, and would never be the only Saturday assistant on duty in a pharmacy that only really needs one.
Good luck to him. A good job for a boy of his age is to check the stock in OTC area against what the EPOS says. He is probably mad about computers and would be an exercise to show him practical use.
