    Too Slow

If you start work somewhere whether as a pre-reg or dispensor are you immediatly meant to work at lightning speed?

I mean just because the staff there work fast they surely cant compair you as they have been there for years and know where everything is and what their policies are. So surely to accuse a new member of staff of being slow or to expect them to know where everything is kept after having a quick glance at the layout of the place is simply absurd. One example some chemists keep branded drugs mixed with the generic drugs but they dont always keep them under the generic name, so you may find Benerva with the T's or maybe the B's or find cialis with the C's when really it should be with the T's.

Speed develops with experience and confidence.

Do you agree, or do you think all pharmacies are the same and the after a quick introduction and tour you should be able to work as fast and efficiently as 'Mrs Smith' who has been there the last 20 years or so?

you sure you are in the right job if you don't know where everything is after having glanced at the shelves as you walked through the dispensary?!?!? shocking!!

in all honesty i don't think its speed and confidence (although that does help) its more working out their logic, like you say, of where they keep all the drugs....i still find myself twizzing around the carousel looking for drugs, only to find i'm looking on the wrong shelf, after having twizzed it round 2 or 3 times!!!

I'd much rather work with folk who are accurate, helpful and have a sense of humour....these folk who think they are fantastic because they are quicker than you usually make many errors......

    Re: Too Slow

Accuracy has got to be better than speed, two of our key dispensers, one flies through the collection scripts, the other takes time but gets there. The one who flies through usually spends half an hour the next morning doing her "corrections," the slower one hasnt made a mistake in months.

Also in the Pharmacy where I work we have an MDS room on the floor above the main Pharmacy, which has its own stock room, however occasionally items have to be "borrowed" from the walk-in Pharmacy, staff who have been working there for over 10 years dont have a clue where things are kept- how can a newbie be expected to know this?

The best thing to do is to slow them down with a few pointy questions, in rreply to them when they ask why you are slow: e.g. why is levothyroxine stored under T?
Why do you keep clopidogrel 75 generic under the P brands?
Once they understand that their layout is defective they won't be so pointy with you.
    Maybe.
    ....just my opinion

If you really want to "Show 'em" learn to touch type.
The biggest bottleneck is getting data into the computer.
If they start to bug you ask them where they keep the 50% Hydrogen Oxide solution.
Where am I?; In the Pharmacy.
Who are you?; The new Number 2.
Who is number 1?; You are number 6.
    What do you want?;..................

At one locum, try as I could, I was unable to find metronidazole under M or F.
Later discovered kept with antibiotics. Naturally not all antibiotics were there.
Also had a frantic search only to find, 'oh it is kept on a shelf in the stock room'.

please can you redispense your post as you misspelt 'reply'
but yeah a good point but it could back fire. I could then be asked to rearrange the entire shelf in correct order, then you'd be like if only I didnt say anything, you see in some situations its best to say nothing.

you could continue to say nothing and you would be back at square 1...frustrated that everyone is expecting you to be up to speed on day 1!
