    Hep injections/ Needle exhange

    Hi

Is it a requirement, or just best interest for a pharmacy technician to have hep injections etc.

I deal with needle exchange at work, and just thought on the idea of an accident, although I do take extra care and don't accept needles off anyone, I let them put needle in the sharps bin.

    Thanks

    Laura

That is the way we have always dealt with needle exchange as well - No handling by staff & the returnee puts the sealed sharps bin in the larger bin. It's choice whether you have the vaccine. I've never bothered but it has always been offered to staff dealing if it makes them feel more comfortable.

On the other hand- one of the places I locum at has a supervision room with a hatch so the staff there have to handle the sharps bin (or should I say sharps safe) so the risk of them coming into contact with fluids increases. I guess I would encourage them more strongly.

The owner of the pharmacy should pay for your hep A+B jabs! i would say it is a requirement to get them, as this is the least a manager could do to ensure the safety of the staff.
Hep B requires 3 injections, theoretically at 0,6 and 12 months, but in practice they give you an injection every week for 3 weeks.
Hep B injection costs around 40 quids, and you can claim the money from the pharmacy

A lot of surgeries will give you the injections for free if you explain you are at risk and work in the healthcare profession. Mine did.

    What GP surgeries???

I'll try that. It will give me extra protection and not only that, I have read Locums need proof of having them or something.

Please post the source where you read that it is a prerequisite for a locum pharmacist or something.

Don't forget to mention the forum - if you look at their advert on the site they offer a money incentive.

That's interesting, as I'm positive most full-time pharmacy staff don't have them...
