    Yep. The DoH should instead introduce new incentives to discourage doctors from prescribing by brand (including branded generics). In particular, there should be financial penalties for PCTs which promote branded generics. The DoH does not support the use of branded generics because they increase costs to the NHS in the long term. In spite of this, they can produce short term savings for PCTs on a local basis. As you know, such prescribing is damaging to pharmacy and leads to unfair distribution of purchase profits. PCTs should not be allowed to promote this type of prescribing. Rather than introducing generic substitution, the DoH needs to step in to prevent PCTs from encouraging inappropriate forms of prescribing in their area.

    Heartily agree. The cat M cutbacks are damaging enough, but the branded generic situation is downright disgraceful. Bournemouth PCT seems to push SIMVADOR for Simvastatin, and many PCT's advocate Ventolin or Salamol scripts.
