H1N1 Swine Flu Pandemic declared by WHO

Here is a copy of the email sent by the RPSGB

    SWINE FLU PANDEMIC DECLARED

At 5pm this evening the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared a swine flu pandemic at a press conference in Geneva. The reaction from the UK Departments of Health have not yet been announced.

We are aware that many pharmacy staff will be having to respond to anxious patients and members of the public as a result. Please urge the public to remain calm and if someone displays the symptoms of virus H1N1 to follow the advice of the Department of Health.

Advice on hand and respiratory hygiene:
Cover nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing; use a tissue when possible.
Dispose of dirty tissues promptly and carefully
Maintain good basic hygiene; for examply, wash hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of the virus from hands to face or to other people
Clean hard surfaces (eg door handles) frequently using a normal cleaning product
Make sure children follow this advice.
We will be updating our website as and when we know further information. Click here to view the RPSGB's information in the H1N1 pandemic.

I dunno. If someone is sneezing a bit, but don't know if they have been in contact with someone who has been to mexica/USA/Australia, then they are not going to go to the doctor or think to isolate themselves.

Leaving malaysia, I had to go get a thermal scan at the airport, at that time there was no cases of swine flu reported there. Anyone with raised body temperature will be subjected to proper testing procedures. On arrival to the UK, no such an instrument to detect the increase in body temperature. Just some signs saying if you are experiencing any of the symptoms of swine flue, contact one of our agents.
I hope they introduced thermal scanning at the airport for those arriving or leaving the country.

Just tell the public more people die each day in the UK as a result of car accidents than swine flu (in fact no death cases from swine flu here) and they will leave the pharmacy with a smile on their face. Some might report you for being apathetic lol

Go and buy shares in Roche or 3M...The declaration follows the last surge of cases all over the world. Having said that, so far cases have been mild and people recover after few days. I'm just at loss to understand the toll it caused in Mexico!

Same on arriving in Turkey last week, there was a couple of clinical looking people with a thermal camera.
Some of the passport staff were wearing masks and gloves as well.

Its going to be a VERY busy flu season this autumn as whilst this virus is so far mild it will infect around half the UK population in the next 6 months.
So watch those P meds sales go through the roof!

All bulk orders of Tamiflu now non-returnable to wholesalers in Ireland. What's the UK position?

No longer available from wholesalers as government have "quaranteened" the lot (alledgely)
The Health Protection Agency control supplies in the UK. from now on.

I think they think that relenza might be more effective for this variant, and if I'd produced a few billion pounds worth of ordered stuff, I wouldn't be taking it back either.
