Hi, am due to start my NVQ3 traing within the next 8 weeks, and just wondered if anyone who has already done it could let me know if there is anything i could be studying now to give myself a head start, ie, some prep or background reading on any specific areas.
Many thanks.
Following on from my last reply in a previous thread I spoke with some techs in a hospital I just finished a four week summer placement in and I remember being told they attend college 1 day a week for pharmacy practice and there's also a medicines management module that may or may not be needed for NVQ3 but definitely adds to the 'credits' for moving up the bands.
It depends what route you're going down - if you're a hospital technician then it depends on where your strengths lie. For me I struggled with chemistry because I hadn't studied it at A-level, whereas others had problems with biology. You definitely need to brush up on your maths, you'll be using it at college and work. By the end of your first year you'll probably be doing things like grams to milligrams and other conversions, percentages of substances and how much of a substance you need if it is a 10% solution, and w/v and v/v (weight in volume and volume in volume). At work you need to be able to (in your head or on a calculator) work out how many tablets you need to dispense for a 1 week/month course etc - if they take 1 tablet 4 times a day, how many a week etc. Memorising your 28 and 30 times tables would be very helpful to a point, since nearly every pack of tablets comes in multiples of 28 or 30, and you use that same value to work out how many tablets a month.
Hope this helps, and doesn't scare you off too much - most of it you pick up on the fly, or you'll be taught what you need to know as you progress. Enjoy!
Aw thanks very much everyone, will get brushin up on the maths for sure! Have just got a book from the library - An Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry. An introduction...its a 1000 pages thick!! Lol.
Never mind, i'll get there in the end
