The DOH acknowledges that discount is available in the market and adjusts the clawback scale in the drug tariff to recover as much as it can. Discount is also clawed back on category M medicines and we have had some really nasty shocks with this. If you purchased all of your medicines from a full line wholesaler you would have significantly more taken from you than you earn in discount. That would be sufficient to bankrupt most businesses.
Short liners offer a limited range of stock at prices that allows pharmacies to pay staff, pay overheads and generally remain in business. Thank the lord for them!
