    Question Microbiology coursework

    Hi everyone!

I'm a first year pharmacy student and am panicing and flustered by my microbiology coursework!

The question is about the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of:
    1. Phenol 0.5%
    2. Cresol 0.3%
    3. Chlorocresol 0.2%
    4. PMN 0.002%
    5. Benzalkonium chloride 0.2%
    6. Chlorhexidine diacetate 0.2%
    7. Chlorbutol 1%
    8. Thiomersal 0.002%
    9. Benzyl alcohol 2%

    I need to find:
    (1) What is the recommended concentration for each agent?
    (2) What is the safety margin?

Any help or advice would be great.

    try this website:

    Google

    and try the search terms:

    Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of

    and

    safety margin of

    for each of the compounds.

have a read around a few of the 180,000+ pages that come up.

You'll find google (especially the scholarly search parts) invaluable to your coursework on your degree programme. You should also look at the recommended textbooks for each course unit as these will either give you the info you need or point you in the right direction - your uni library will have copies of all of these if you don't want to spend oodles of cash buying them all.

Don't you realise that students are far too busy with their other activities to actually look anything up in a library or google. Far easier just to ask us to do it for them. Lazy gits!

    Re: Microbiology coursework

I always thought MIC values were calculated using microbiological tests, with different concs of the compound being looked at etc. This is what we did in our 2nd year anyway. I don't know of a book where MIC values are listed because of the different tests used to calculate it.

    OK,
    I'll be gentle....

    Try Rideal-Walker, Chick-Martin, dilution coefficient.
There will be some links to more recent stuff I expect if you start there.

    Try google and google scholar.
