Hi Pharmanaut, I just have a look the site you mentioned but couldn't get well what actually it wanted to say. Is it something regarding to grant supermarkets the licence to run a pharmacy? Then what's the relation between 100 hour pharmacy and supermarket? I feel I’ve made a mess of things![]()
At the moment you can open a pharmacy if you keep open for 100 hours a week. Normal hours in UK are 40-45.

At the moment to open a pharmacy in the UK you have to show that the pharmacy is necessary or desirable.
You are unlikely to get a new contract due to clustering of pharmacies around the source of prescriptions, ie the GP surgeries.
You can apply for a 100 hour pharmacy which is exempt from the necessary or desirable test.
However, you have to open 100 hours per week.
This is quite a commitment in terms of staffing, particularly pharmacists costs.
Most pharmacists would not want to work more than 40 - 45 hours per week.
Some of us only do 37-38hrs.

Thank you jonep and pharmanaut for make it clear to me
I always wondered how many items roughly you have to do a month to cover all the 100hr pharmacy expenses.. i reckon 4000 is not enough...
100 hours per week for 1 year is 5,200 hours.
4000 items per month is 48,000 per year.
Just under 10 items per hour - OK you will get peaks and troughs (some very deep troughs)
You would have time for other services like MUR.
Most of your business would probably be late evening, unless you gatecrashed and an existing pharmacy with a 100 hour exemption.
Your dispensing fees alone will be 48,000 x 90p = UKP 43,200.
This equates to UKP 8 per hour.
OK you will get the purchase profit (but you will be nailbiting all the time over CAT M), OTC sales, some other contract payments.
But I doubt you will be able to cover staff costs, property, utilities etc.
Hard to calculate the profit threshold due to variable property costs but I'm sure someone has 'ball-park' figures they could put into the mix, and help us work out the 'break-even' threshold.
Not worth the hassle for 4,000 items per month.

I think PCT pays about £2000 a month if you dispense over 2100 items a month (that's just an additional payment for service) but please correct me if i'm wrong.
There's also a payment for EPS. £600 a month?
I guess that doesn't help either..
I wonder what's the real story with purchase profits. Sometimes I notice lets say omeprazole 20mg caps. On the screen it come's up as 75p, when the invoice comes it's £1.81 which is the same as drug tariff price..
There must be something i don't know as the 100hr pharmacies are growing..
It's a pity I never worked for independents..
What you need to do is some locums at a 100 hour pharmacy.
