    Unhappy Closure of NVQ3....

    Hi all,
I'm a trainee dispenser at a Boots pharmacy (rebranded from Alliance) in Cambridge. I started my NVQ3 a while ago while we were just about to be rebranded as Boots and got seriously behind in my NVQ. I've recently sought about giving myself a kick up the bum, getting an extension and finishing it, however a couple of days after asking for a year extension I get a letter informing me the NVQ3 is closing and I need to either finish the work in 6 months time by the end of March '10 or withdraw and do the ADAC course with the possibility of re-applying for the NPA NVQ3 in the future.
Does anyone know much about this or if I would definately get the chance to do it again if I come to the conclusion that 6 months just isn't enough time for me to finish what I've got left to do.
    Thanks, Fiona

That is exactly the same situation that I was in, same company too. I am now doing ADAC.

I am in same situation and have been working my butt off since the letter arrived, my manager won't let me give up now and not become a technician, i am annoyed though as the regional support said i could take years if i needed to, so i wasn't rushing it... so far ive sent in 3 pieces of work so how i'm going to do the rest in 6 months i do not know! the area manager says its do-able, i'm not so sure!

I think it is do-able but you are going to have to spend a lot of time on it and have a huge amount of support from your tutor/assesor. It does seem a shame that you have some so far and to not finish.

Keep going it really is worth it in the end. You have put in a lot of effort so far so get stuck into the last bit. If nothing else think of the pay rise. After all we are all working for the money!!!!

    Re: Closure of NVQ3....

I started mine in march 2007, I did the introductory one and my boss did not help me at all so i gave him it back and told him with no support i was not willing to do it, I got the letter last month giving me 6 months to complete the rest, I do it every day at work whether were busy or not, we don't get paid to do it at home.

Cornish girl, whats the going rate as a dispenser in boots as i know my money wont go up that much, I'm only on £5.80 an hour now, and do everything i should not be doing

    Re: Closure of NVQ3....

Thanks for the replies! I've just got this little battle going on in my head...one part of me really wants to do it and thinks maybe it is possible....the other side is a bit more realistic, my assessor has had my unit 2 for nearly a year (?), there never seems to be any time to do any of it at work and I haven't had much support from anyone over the last 18 months (I'm to blame ofcourse, I should have just got on with it instead of just coasting along!).
With all that in mind, and thinking about how if it needs editing, it will need to be sent back and forth etc, I just don't think I can do the amount I've got left in 6 months
Anyway....It says in my letter how once I've done this ADAC, I could still get the opportunity to do the NVQ3 again in the future and then sign up to RPSGB eventually, I just wondered if this is true (if so how likely is that to happen ), or if once the ADAC has been done its all I can ever do and I'll never get the chance to be a technician?!
Back to work tomorrow anyway, will have to investigate!

    Hi DispenserFiFi

I find it difficult to believe that you will never be a Technician. You sound as though you are committed to doing this and that's part of the battle.
I really struggled with mine because I was off sick a lot due to an ongoing condition and I still managed to do it in time. I will say that I probably did more at home than I did in work but it was worth every second of my time as I saw it as investing in me. No one will ever get rich working in Pharmacy but qualifying as a Tech was one of my better decisions. It has opened many doors and i'm sure this will continue.
I've said many times on this forum to stick with it, get on with it and it will be worth it. I completely stand by these statements.
I will also add that ANY courses, certificates, training etc that a person aquires can only be a positive thing. If you look at your situation, say you do finish your current course, there is nothing that can stop you going for the NVQ 3 if that's what you really want to do.

FiFi, I'm doing ADAC and I was under the impression that I could go onto NVQ 3 afterwards. Speak to someone within the company and get them to confirm it before making a decision.
