    Is this an intervention?

    Evening all,

We had a locum pharmacist in the other day, he put an intervention through the till for a prescription where the doctor had prescribed 30g of betnovate rd cream, they only make 100g (which is what we dispensed and endorsed) so he put it through the till, to claim £28 as an intervention?!

No it is not an intervention mur - this is fraud! betnovate rd cream is only available in 100g pack size, so if script asks for 30g the pharmacy should/will dispense the nearest pack size = 100g which will be reimbursed by PPA. How could this pharmacist think this to be an intervention mur???!!! How has he/she made an intervention? If it's a case that as a result of seeing a script for 30g of betnovate rd cream he/she has conducted a standard mur that covers all other medication (assuming patient takes/uses any other meds) AND then chose to send a copy to gp to highlight the fact betnovate rd only comes in 100g pack size then that would be fine

Reason why I asked for a further explanation from original poster!

What do you mean when you say he put it through the till? This is not an intervention.

Payment would automatically be for 1 x 100g (even in the absence of an endorsement) because Betnovate RD cream is classed as a 'special container' by the PPA.

Why would you do that?! The GP would think you were wasting their time!

I wouldn't worry about it either.
The Drug Tariff permits you to do it.
GPs have a copy of the drug tariff too.
Provided its labelled correctly - off it goes.

by putting it through the till i mean as we do with an MUR, not sure how it works really but whenever we do an MUR it goes through, I guess its so head office have our figures? anyway this intervention happened when I was on lunch i came back to find the paperwork filled in the MUR folder, nothing else on the paperwork apart from saying something along the lines of 'script recevied for 30g, 30g not made so 100g issued prescriber not contacted' can't quite remember the full detail but certainly no MUR was done with the patient. I am not really sure what to do as it was a locum but do I need to report this to someone? God i thought a small store would be so much easier than a large one but i have had more problems than ever before since I started here!!

then as i posted earlier i would class this as fraud - it may be the locum pharmacist just does NOT understand the necessary requirements - which beggers belief if this is the case!!! If you are the regular pharmacist (are you a pharmacist?) then i would be inclined to try and speak with the locum concerned and clarify the issues AND then you (or regular pharmacist or area manager etc) should explain how this isn't an MUR and how it would be considered fraud to claim a payment etc

I'm a dispenser, maybe I will have a word with my manager, don't want him back if he is going to do stuff like that!
