    locum pay rates

some time ago i noticed that someone was asking "how much do locums get paid via an agency". They said they thought it was a minimum of £25 but could only get a max of £23.

well a development to promote some chat.

i know of a company that has preferential dates from a multiple that they will fill providing they get the locums to work for £2 per less and for no expenses than the multiple would pay via other agencies or by booking direct.
call me cynical but it seems an agency has made a commercial choice at the expense if it's locum pool-the people that generate it's income.

not the best commercial agreement i can think of.

do the maths-£2 per hour less say £5 per travel less, parking fees gone etc. Book via them and do a 10 hour day. costs you £25+ all the other things per day in lost income. if all your work was via them and say 30 months per year you would lose £3000 per year minimum.

i think it is fair given the economic climate to freeze the pay but to decrease it and from a company that is meant to support us,l it seems to me to not be playing the game and it is certainly time to for me to vote with my feet on this one.

    what are other peoples thoughts?

    Bad state of affairs.
    I'd move agencies.
Not sure why this should be acceptable.
Increased prescription numbers, reduction in staff hours, increased legal responsiblity - for less pay?

I agree with pharmanaut - move agencies. It sounds like commercial suicide to me for the agency.

Just the start I am afraid. In the past, agencies were paid a premium to obtain staff. now multiples will use them to get the cheapest locum available, saves them doing the dirty work.

find yourself your own work nearby and negotiate your own rates !.
Maybe some multiples are passing on the reduction in income they get from the NHS. Depending on how busy the store is it might be hard to justify moren than £23 an hour

Harsh economics at work here for all of us.
Agree every time - drop the agency and find work directly locally.
Avoid the 2 hours a day commute.

Just been working at Asda in Southport. Agreed rate was £27 as it was a last minute booking. Store manager would only sanction £23 & no mileage!!! I have been ripped off.

Did you get the "agreed rate" in writing?
If you did get a solicitor on the case.
If you didn't you've not been ripped off you've been taught a valuble lesson, cheap at the price.

Sorry I'm not sympathetic but it's a hard world out there.
At least you can get your own back by having the satisfaction of never shopping in another Asda.

The superintentent pharmacist from ASDA was taking questions on this forum a while back. You could find the thread and send him a private message--I can't remember his name.
