A big difference between hospital and community pharmacy is the support available. In the community you are part of a much smaller team. Which can work for/against you, you understand how each other work but over time relationships can become strained (not in all cases though). In community I worked alongside 1 pharmacist and 1 part-time dispenser plus shop staff. In the hospital now we have best part of 70 qualified technicians of varying experience (and salaries) plus ATOs and SATOs and then say 30 pharmacists (probably more). So the workload is much better shared.
Am I happier in hospital than community - yes and no. I have specialised into a specific role (as techs tend to do in hospital) and really enjoy the job, but then I also had some great times in the community. If my role was solely dispensary based then I wouldn't pick one over the other.
My experience is that happiness in your job can only be attributed to a job you enjoy, a team you get along with and a employer who supports you better than others.
Pharmacy as a career is dependent on what you make of it... just like any other careers. I like to think that being positive and passionate about what I do is based on my own goals. Anyway, we as pharmacists have always seemed to be 1 tracked - let's think about how as an individual you can explore other opportunitites to diversify your income to benefit you and your family - SOMETHING POSITIVE to think about it in this 'negative' forum'
I think that you will find that there are not very many jobs at all at the moment even if you are prepared to travel tremendously long distances. There may be one or two areas with vacancies. If they happen to be where you live you will have to keep it to yourself as the situation could change for the worse very quickly indeed.
