    EU Pharmacist

    Hi everyone,

I'm a EU Pharmacist, registered in the UK for over 7 years now and about to become a full time locum... now then, one of the agencies I am getting work with got me a few placements with Morrisons and then they phoned me back to say that it was Morrisons' policy not to employ foreign pharmacists due to some Government's legislation!! so they cancelled those days for me! Is there something going on? Because that is really getting at me...

Thank you very much for leting me vent my utter disappointment.

    Can open..worms everywhere!
If that is true then you get it in writing from the agency, along with a copy of the correspondence they received from Morrison's stating the reasons behind their decision, and a reference to the Government legislation they are implementing (if they will release it to you which is unlikely). Then talk to the PDA.

I don't disbelieve you, but are you absolutely sure about this? You're 7 years UK qualified after all!

I'm sure that was what they told me but then again, it might be that the girl at the other end was trying to fob me off as she wasn't really helpful... never mind, I will keep fighting on monday!

    Have a nice weekend!

    OrganOlive, I'm afraid it's true:
From page 9 of the latest "Medicines, Ethics, &Practice" booklet, july 2009:

"Pharmacists who registered with the RPSGB by virtue of a qualification in Pharmacy awarded in a relevant European State, are not able to be the Pharmacist in personal control of premises in Great Britain that have been registered as a Pharmacy for less than three years."

So, basically, us EU pharmacists can't work in most of the 100-hour pharmacies, as they haven't existed for more than 3 years.
It doesn't matter whether you've been on the Register for 7 days or 70 years, you still won't be able to work everywhere where a UK-qualified pharmacist, fresh out of a UK Uni, will( But you still have to pay the same retention fee!)!(
Ze genuine Article, present & perfect!

I stand well and truly corrected. Thanks Zoggite.

yes. unfortunately the locum rate has been driven down as there are to many pharmacists. so I now have to work 6 days a week to earn what I think is reasonable. plus the society decided we needed 10 more pharmacy schools. i know a number of pharmacists that have gone on to do medicine but still remain registered. also a lot of pharmacists change career because it's not the most exciting job in the world. we need more pharmacists though as the uk has received about 3 million people from eu and 2 million from africa in recent years. so its not all doom and gloom

i am not attacking anyone, but seriously no need to be sarcastic when all the moves are benefiting EU pharmacists, not UK qualified pharmacists! at least the society has to test out skills, english skills, communication.....etc during the pre-reg year, why they can't do anything against EU pharmacists.
if the rules re the 3 years were removed, you guys would take over everything, and guess what? would probably employ EU pharmacists, just like what happen with the oil refinery in lincolnshire!........! can anyone prove me wrong on this one?
the country is going bust, and everyone is taking the chance to grab as much as they can! enough 500 EU pharmacists are coming every year, according to pj article published today, and no one is going there........
Why should I pay higher retention fees? Am I less qualified than you?We also have to pay for uni fees, we also have to do a pre-reg in our home countries, we have to face sexual discrimination when applying for a job back at home and really low wages etc etc etc... And about flying over here and taking over, you could try and do the other way round if you wanted!! At least in my case, I had to prove that I was able to communicate in english etc through very strict regulations, exams, certificates... It's not all doom and gloom, dude. Oh, and also, I contribute to the UK economy every single month, since the first day I arrived. Now I wish I hadn't.
