Hi, I am a newly qualified Pharmacist, and I was wondering what the general job situation is like at the moment? I've heard it's quite good. I am more interested in retail pharmacy, but would be interested to hear about the situation in other area's too. Also, what kind of salary is typical for a newly qualified Pharmacist, or how much per hour for locum? Thanks for advice/help.
You should check your sources of information.
Because Irish grads sit their licence exam in November and join the register in December there aren't any 'newly qualified' pharmacists around at this time of year. By now there is an equilibrium, with last year's crop having either found work or emigrated, but next month you will be competing with 150-160 new pharmacists who know the system and have the contacts. They will all be chasing community work because there is a recruitment embargo in our health system so NO new hospital posts. Unless you have something to give you a competitive advantage over them you should think carefully before making a move.
Wage rates look better than in the UK, but tax rates are higher (40% emergency tax on locums) as is the cost of living so even if you get a job you are unlikey to be any better off.
Hi Hibernia,
Thanks for the reply. I am the "newly qualified" pharmacist, I am Irish, but qualified in Europe. I did'nt know that the Irish qualified pharmacist's only come on stream in December. So I guess, I will have to compete with them for a job.
Regarding the job situation, I heard from a pharmacist a couple of week's ago that there were a lot of vacancies available. But, maybe that will change come December.
