    pharmacy assistant wage in ireland

    Hi there,

I am looking into studying the ipu pharmacy technician course in September. However in order to do so I have to be working at least 20 hours a week in a pharmacy. I am going to go around with my cv this week and try to explain what I am looking to do as I don't have any pharmacy experience. I was just wondering what sort of wage a counter assistant would get paid starting out in Dublin? I have no idea what to expect. Thanks in advance

Most of those who do the IPU course have been working in pharmacy for some time and have already done a medicines counter assistant (MCA) course. Usually the employer suggests to existing staff that they might like to upskill by doing the course rather than employing someone who just wants the hours to do the course. Have you spoken to anybody who has done or is doing the course? They might be able to give you an idea of what to expect.

If you have no retail experience or other qualifications you can expect the entry level for most jobs to be minimum wage.

    Hi again,

I was looking into during the course full time in DIT but can't afford not to work for 2 years. I'm 27 so have bills to pay. My friend works in a pharmacy and has just started this course through ipu. I would be willing to do any course the pharmacy needed me to and work up to the pharmacy technician course. Is it not good for them to know they will hold onto me for 3 years at least? I worked in a food shop for 4 years partime during college.

So, what did you study at college? Any jobs in that area?

I studied anatomy and physiology and sports therapy. Very few jobs in that area. I just love all things medical and enjoy dealing with people day to day in work so I think this area could really suit me. I'm just worried that the wage would be so low I couldn't really live in it in Dublin where living cost more.

Sorry if my first post seemed discouraging but you seem to have already spotted the problem that you will have difficulty earning enough to support yourself.
You sound like an ideal candidate but I'm afraid that you do fall into the trap of being overqualified for some employers. Most pharmacies are cutting back on staff rather than hiring.
I would advise going to pharmacies at quieter times, e.g. early mornings and asking politely if you can have a few words with the boss if they aren't busy. Present yourself well in the couple of minutes you get and you have a much better chance of being considered than if you just drop in a CV. Also keep an eye on employment websites, some places looking for a technician will take on a trainee if they can't get somebody suitable. Finally ask your friend if she can ask her boss if they know of anybody looking for staff, even if it is only for Christmas so that you can get a foot in the door.

Yet another example of the educational system failing students. Apart from the moneyed few who could study anything and still become diplomats, merchant bankers, etc the rest of us need an education to ensure we get a good job. Too often governments merely view higher education as a means of reducing youth unemployment. What glittering career were you promised with anatomy/physiology/sports therapy? At least it is one up on media studies or human rights. Both popular courses.
