    Locum work in Ireland

    Hi all,

Does anyone know what the current locum rates are in Ireland, I have just registered down south and have no idea how to go about getting some work... Are there any recruitment agencies left, seem to get nothing but dead lines when I ring them!! Is it that bad..! Anyone know of any counties where there is any work about. Your help is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

25/hr with emergency tax deducted at source of 42% plus 6%prsi plus 2% income levy.
So, if you work a 9 hour day you walk away with about 110 euro.

    Agencies--locumlocators, pharmacyone, locum supplies.

Amount of work -- weekdays virtually nil. Saturdays, usually something in the Dublin area.

Yep..that's pretty much it in a nutshell.

IPU are currently contesting the Revenue decision to treat all locums as employees, in order to alleviate the harsh stance on taxation; whether you are VAT registered, or operate a limited company is the basis of the argument, in an attempt to allow locums to become self-employed again. Unfortunately, it could take years to sort out, as the HSE have moved away from their successful shafting of pharmacists, to aim at patients. The DPS threshold will undoubtedly be increased in the forthcoming budget. Many GPs, however, will continue to earn upwards of €500,000 per annum. I don't mind adding here on a personal note, that from first-hand experience of Irish GPs, they're not the best, and that's being polite.
It's all down to who you know, or trawl the chains, who we all avoided in the past, but have ironically become the lifeline for locums.....and they know it.

If it's any use, as Lamzee says, I'm constantly being offered work in Ballymun.

You will also need to learn the schemes and how to process them all--me, Fleegle and Hibernia can help you with that, but you will need to get at least a week's work experience in a southern pharmacy to really get the hang of them. Also try to get some practice on southern computer systems. Try the chains Unicare, Bradleys, Adrian Dunne, Health Express for locum work, but try an independent for experience.

Yes, as Fleegle says they are always short in Ballymun, so if you don't mind methadone and drive an old car, you might be in with something there.

Remember that 250-ish southern pre-regs qualify this month...

    Sorry.

Frankly, if I was newly UK-qualified, I would do the same. The Irish economy will hopefully recover eventually, but based on the current eejits who profess to run the country, it may take a while..most of the criminal element in Ireland appear to have been either high-ranking politicians, bankers or property developers. They will not be prosecuted, as Ireland appears not to 'do things like that'. Stay away. Believe us....

Lloyds have six vacancies in Norfolk. Lots of locum work at present.

    You might be wise.
The number qualifying is around 160 but they know the schemes, the computer systems, the set-up.
No offence, but if I was looking for a locum (and I'm not) I would go for one of them or one of the pharmacists with many years experience who are scrambling about for work. I don't think you would have a hope. I hate to be negative but I'm afraid you may have wasted your registration fee.

What locum agencies have you been using, pharmer? I am constantly being bombarded with texts about emergency Saturday locums in Dublin. It seems the three agencies I'm registered with have to face every weekend with at least one of their shops unable to open. Would like to help them out with more contacts although I agree they can be rather panicky and pushy with the texts. And the gas thing is, yes, not a single weekday can they offer me!

Yes, but those shops are in Ballymun and other places like that. Would you park a car in Ballymun? Or walk back to the bus/train in the dark?

    ??????????
