Sorry if this is a daft question - I've never used an agency before, was just a self-employed sole trader
Tax issues are really for accountants..agencies don't provide tax advice. In all circumstances, you have two options in my view, if you wish to remain a locum in you own right. Sole-trading has gone, so you must either establish a limited company whereby you can carry on invoicing gross fee plus vat at 21.5% as before (accountants fees will increase with this option) or attempt to find regular days to fill your diary, and register for PAYE with each business..this way the PAYE will be easier to manage, as you will be dealing with relatively few 'employers'.

Bottom line..this whole thing is a complete mess, and is clearly a government ploy to create immediate tax revenue via PAYE, because they've found themselves with a national debt similar to that of Paraguay.

cheers chaps.. Not keen on the limited company option, don't think I'll make enough (after all the income levies !!) to be worth registering for VAT either....

    PAYE then.

    Hey Twinkle...

Don't forget the VAT threshold in Ireland for provision of services is only €35,000. Mostly reclaimable at 21.5% which is what you charge on top of your gross fee. VAT may be reclaimed on any legitimate business expense, to include diesel, vehicle purchase and upkeep, laptop purchase, etc..etc... Don't rule it out.

If you have just moved to Ireland, you may be able to juggle the 188 day rule on tax residency a bit--see your accountant. You will still have to pay PAYE Irish tax, but could get a UK tax rebate on some of it if you are UK resident more than 188 days in the tax year. (You may have moved too early in the tax year for that though).

been here 18 months now so don't think I could swing that... I'm already registered with Revenue as a sole trader for my gardening business, not paid any income tax yet though as I've earned bugger-all so far.
