Im still a student. However one of our weekend locums works as a QA pharmacist for GSK. The role is self explanatory. There is alot of legislation and law involved. Although you will have the oppurtunity to climb the career ladder and obtain training as a QP. If you want i can find out if she is on this forum?
That would ge great, i believe the salary being offered is comparable to an average newly qualified community pharmacist £35-40K, im particularly interested what sort of future progression you would have, and salary that could be expected.
More importantly interested to know if this is quite an enjoyable role or if it is quite a boring repetative job!
Yep that is comparable to a newly qualified pharmacist and you could always locum as well if you wanted. She really enjoys her job and sometimes go's abroad with her work with gsk (she likes travelling). Future oppurtunitys are immense. You can cross over to a whole number of areas. Salary wise she told me after 10 yrs she could be looking at £65k to 100k as a manager, qualified person, associate director or even director.. A search on emed careers will confirm this. Apparently its really varied work as well. But she said you could end up in sales, research, medical information, regulatory affairs, clinical trials or stay in the same department if you wish.
Do a google search on careers in the pharma industry or the ABPI website. Contains alot more info.
I will ask her when she nexts works with us which could be on saturday.
Im a student working in pharmaceutical pharmacovigilance, which i think is alot similar to QA. Pharmaceutical regulatory deals with alot of paper work and meeting deadlines. It has got excellent career opportunities, QP pharmacists are very well paid around the regions of 100-120K. So if you are a bit of a bookworms who likes doing a whole load of research then this is the job for you..
Industry has always been hard to get into, but industry is more demanding in terms of experience than qualifications. So if someone does decide to get into industry with no experience, he/she might have a salary alot lower compared to what it is in community.
Well people do say its harder to get into as you need a 2:1. However i have spoken to pharmacists in industry who locum for us and my lecturers and they say it is exagerated. They said only a few pharmacists attempt to get jobs in industry. Creating an illuison if you will. The salary might be lower but you get end up on over £200000k if you work hard enough.
