There are so many different areas it impossible to mention them all. You hvae clinical research to marketing to patent law. Much research has moved abroad however much clinical research is still carried out in the uk and marketing etc. Most things are still present in the uk accept normal research. Plus the pay is good. One of my relatives did an mba , entered marketing and now earns about 80k and gets to travel the world. Its well worth considering. Anything else let me know

    Thanks for the help mate,
i was initially going to go with something like biomedicine so i can carry out a career in research or something like that but recently a friend really put me off it saying i shouldnt waste my potential on something like biomedicine.

it sounds like i can do the same sort of thing with a degree in pharmacy so it does sort of make sense.

the only problem seems to be that all of these companies are moving out :S

what is the pay like for an industrial pharmacist?
    thanks very much,
    Mubeen

No problems. Yep alot are moving to cheaper markets i.e. Asia. But i woudnt listen to anyone who is always negative. Do what u want to do with your own life. Deparments that are moving are mainly the drug research departments. However there are still many remain here due to the excellent facilities Europe can provide. U can always do hospital pharmacy. Pay starts lower around 24-31k but within ten yrs u cud be on 50-70k. If its a large teaching hospital it is likely to carry out alot of clinical research in conjunction with industry. Here is a link to a survey done by the RPSGB for industrial pay http://rpsgb.org/pdfs/ipgsurvey08.pdf. But dont worry to much oppurtunities are still vast, u can go into marketing, regulatory affairs, law, clinical research, formulation design. The choice is yours. Then u always have research through academia. The RPSGB already annouced it wants about 300 more pharmacists to do PHDs yet another oppurtunity. Remember most of all passion and having an optermistic outlook will go a long way.

Could you please tell me what is an MBA? How do you get into marketing? Is it just a normal pharmacy degree then you decide which area you want to choose in the final year?

    Re: industrial pharmacy

Yeh sorry john. Been hiding and watching the forum for a long time but never got round to registering. I should have introduced myself. Well im Antonio and i am from hertfordshire

Nope mba is one year full time or two years part time. There are many business schools in the uk as john said. Best bet for gettin into marketing would be to first become a rep and cross over. It used to be a fun job but these days is stressful and requires a very thick skin.

Asterix, once you have worked in a hospital enviroment for 10yrs salarys such these arnt rare. First band is 6 (24-31k) after pre reg, then 2-3 after a diploma band 7 (29-39k). Say you are good at your job and have a passion for it/ prepared to relocate u cud then go onto band 8a (37-45k) and then 8b etc. Again if you have a general joy for your career and patients money comes as natural along with personal satisfaction of knowing you helped someone.
