    On call pay changes

    Hi all,
I just wanted to gather thoughts on the on call arrangments in hospitals currently. My situation is that there is a consultation in progress whereby we will be paid at a rate per hour for the inconvenience of being on call. Currently it states £x per hour (rate no decided yet).
I have heard on the grapevine that one trust in the north had agreed that rate as £1 per hour. that equates to about £118 per week of on call, which is a massive drop in pay for on call. What are the vibes coming from your places?
    cheers

On call arrangements will have a big influence on where I ultimately decided to take up a band 6 job. Don't know the situation where I work now, but I suspect it'll be similar to what you've described.

Whe I worked the night shift at BTC Aldgate in the 50s, extra pay was £1/week.

i wouldn't base the pay arrangements for where you go for a job..yes they play a role in deciding but i wouldn't put it at the top of your list......you ahve to rememebr you'll be at the bottom of the ladder, so be expected to pick up the pieces and take the flack....

when i did my oncall, it was hard work and i moaned throughout it, but looking abck on it now after having finished it, i can only laugh at it and think why was i so quick to moan about it...i do kind of miss it as well now,

How much would you be willing to accept though for a week of being on call?

i don't think it works like that...where i worked we got EDC allowance each month which worked out to be about £250 per month, every month, so you might not have done any oncalls but you still get paid it....

then depending on whether we were in the dept after midnight we were able to claim back the time as TOIL or pay at normal rate, then we got paid for the weekends as well....

i don't think you will be able to go in and negotiate a price for doing oncall, i'm sure there will be other candidates willing to fill your shoes if you're not happy with the pay arrangements

    Re: On call pay changes

what you are describing is the situation in the past and currently. however, it is changing nationally to a situation where there will be a rate per hour for being on call. If this is too low, there will be plenty of people dropping out, something that we are experiencing already. The difficulty is that it is in the contract as EDC compulsory in the role i and most hospital pharmacists are currently in. It could turn into a wage cut of 60% or so for being on call!
Just wanted thoughts on the situation in lther trusts?
