Accepted offer but want to go travelling now

Hi all, I'm coming to the end of my pre-reg and accepted an offer back in February for a band 6 position in a hospital starting in August. Now I am considering going travelling for a year rather than going straight into a pharmacy job and a diploma. Just wondering is it a really bad idea to pull out at this stage from the job and would I be "blacklisted" for similar posts or would I be better taking the job and leaving after 6 months or so? Any advise appreciated.

Not a good idea in my view.

not the best idea to sack off the diploma and go travelling....as much good as travelling is, after a year out the last thing you will want to do is come back and sit down and study for a diploma, although it does depend on how motivated you are...

as for leaving after 6 months...again not another great idea....knowing how hospitals work, at the 6 month mark, you're just about up and running on wards and probably just about to start the diploma and oncall etc...plus it means they have recruited someone (you) who will go and bugger off after 6 months...and it means they are unlikely to get someone to replace you so it makes the rotas even tighter for your new "colleagues"...from experience they will probably curse you after you have left as it means they will have to pick up your shifts

if you are desperate to go travelling, maybe do a year, get the certificate (not the full diploma) call it quits and then go travelling...although it won't "blacklist" you it may make it harder for you to apply to jobs if you wanted to come back and finish the diploma

At the end of the day, we can only advise....its your choice/life/career as to what to do!!

Yes, seen on the notice board of a multiple "Absence makes your colleague's work harder".

    I'd do the travelling

Once you start work, its hard to have a career break. I have not been applying for jobs because I want to do some travelling for a few months. Everyone at work said now is the time to do it. Once you start your career, you wont want to stop its momentum

can see both sides to the argument..

go travelling now, then when you apply for jobs its something extra to put on your form and talk about

go travelling later, since you have already accepted the job...may be seen as rude if you rejected it now, plus it could mean a black mark against your name so less of a chance getting the same job back after your travels, plus save now and then go travelling..?more money for travelling

(I didn't want to start a new thread for a small question.)

Can you explain what the "band" refers to and how it works. I come across it a few times before, but don't know what it refers to.

'bands' 'grades' are terms used to lump various jobs into a salary range. Inside each 'band' you would have lower, median, and upper quartiles. Hay MSL were originators. Peter Drucker also an expert in this field.
