6 months hospital 6 months industry

Sorry but yet another dilemma. I have found a placement which says there is 6 months industry and 6 months hospital. The thing is are there any problems with this in the sense that the industry placement is based in manufacturing department and I have to say I am poor with labs but would eventually like to move into clinical trials/business side of industry. Furthemore, the pre-reg paper is mostly clinical so 6 months into industry might be a negative?

However, Industry is something I would like to eventually move out into and I am not sure if this will be a missed opportunity.

Lastly, I have been told to apply for the entire placement via industry website, NOT PHARMALIFE. Does this mean I have extra hospital to apply for?

most industry placements are usually split with hopsital placements....

only you know if you want to move into the manufacturing side of it all....you can still do clinical trials within a hospital setting, its not all done in industry!

if you want to move into industry and thats a definite, then it seems silly to give up on the opportunity...if you apply, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain!!

i think, from friends who did the 6 month split with industry/hospital..the industry placement sorts out your hospital lalcement for you.....doing this if you don't apply for pure hospital palcements through PHARMALIFE you run the risk of having no pre reg if you don't get into the industry side of things

but it sounds like you want to do industry, so go for it!!

as for the pre reg paper, i'ts a case of reading the bnf, and you'll be mroe than likely to pick up the clinical stuff in hospital.....it is possible, as people ahve obviously done the split and succeeded..i can't speak from experience but i know people who ahve done it and are now qualified

    hope that helps

thanks for that, what I am trying to say is the industry placement lasts for 6 months in Manufacture, an area where I am not so great at. However, in the future I would like to go into industry but not into manufacture. Would doing pre-reg in manufacture not be a bad thing?

as for pharmalife I meant I was told for this placement to apply through the industry site (for both hospital and industry split). So if I use apply to 3 other hospitals via pharmalife just for full hospital placements, will I not get a 4th choice free?

    Contact pharmalife and ask them.
Re manufacture, that could mean aseptics or formulation and pre-formulation, i.e the term is quite broad. Most industrial pharmacists start off in this area of industry so if you have this kind of experience under your belt, then this would put you in a better position than other candidates won't it ?

i guess if you get this industry placement, then you have a foot in the door for moving into industry...maybe it could be an area to refine your skills and improve on...another string to your bow!?! plus you ahve had experience in industry..an added bonus!

i don't know about whetehr you get your 4th place free...may be worth speaking to people in your uni or the people in industry??? its been a while since i applied there so its all a little hazy! sorry!

I understand that but my formulation/aseptics skills I have learnt at uni are poor, worries me that I will be undertaking a practical project within industry with such skills!

so don't apply then if you are that worried........one thing i have learnt is that any job you go for, you are never 100% fully qualified to do it.....the industry people can't expect you to be perfect at the formulation/aseptic side of manufacturing!

i don't think on day 1 they will put you in charge of manufacturing their products...

thats what worries me, the fact that i will like to move into industry eventually but this may be give me the best opportunity for that. However, my lab skills leave a lot to be desired.

worry about your lab skills when you get to it....just apply and see what happens......it sounds like you have answered your own question about whether to apply, since you want to move into industry....like i said they won't be expecting a master formulator straight from university

Exactly - there will be appropriate training involved. It's not as if on your first day in hospital pre-reg you'd have to take a full med history on an admissions patient (at least I hope not )
