    Norethisterone help!

    Any advice would be appreciated!

I have pcos and my periods were always very irregular, I took norethisterone to make me have a period (doctors advice) and then again two months later. After taking that I havent had a period since and that was just about two years ago now. Was it the norethisterone that made them stop completely, or just coincidence and its just actually the pcos and thats why they stopped. Any thoughts?!

I know your probably thinking if you work in a pharmacy why didnt you ask your pharmacist - but I didnt fancyasking him that one!

    Thanks for any help x

Appreciate your reticence at a tender age. PCOS?
When I was young rarely asked for advice on such matters. as I got older and times became more relaxed and a private consulting room, found that girls and ladies would confide in me on the most intimate of matters. The urge to confess full details had to be countered by me explaining I did not want the emotional history, just medical history.
Norethisterone used for variety of conditions. Sure Nik and Krystal will know every detail.

Who is Krystal ? Unfortunately I don't know much about treatment of gynae conditions although I haven't come across the use of norethisterone in PCOS before. Some of our consultants tend to use clomifene but again this depends on what symptoms pts get. I'm not too sure whether the norethisterone is the culprit here - I think the best thing is to speak to your GP. I presume you've also seen a gynae specialist at some point ?

Krystal is the forum name for a hospital pharmacist with long experience of working on gynae/obst wards.

I'm not entirely sure of the purpose of prescribing norethisterone in your case. Norethisterone may induce a 'withdrawal bleed' when it is taken for a short time and then stopped. Bleeding usually occurs within a few days of stopping the drug.

I think it's very unlikely that norethisterone has had any long-term effects after two short courses. Your periods have almost certainly stopped due to the PCOS, or perhaps another gyne condition. If your GP cannot treat you, perhaps he could refer you to a gynaecologist?

Have you tried a standard coc pill? Does that not induce a regular withdrawl bleed?
