It is licensed for use in Meniere's as a prophylactic agent against recurrent attacks of vertigo or tinnitus or hearing loss. In an acute attack, prochlorperazine or an anti-histamine is used (for nausea/vomiting and vertigo).

And do you know how many days it needs to work?

No idea I'm afraid - there must be a pharmacology textbook with the answer.

You're right, and it is a bit of a strange drug. Evidence is a bit conflicting to say the least:

In some countries (eg. the US), betahistine is not marketed. I suspect it wouldn't be approved in the UK either if it hadn't already been available since the year dot.
GPs seem to use it a lot around here for a wide variety of different forms of vertigo/dizziness; I don't think this use is justified. They would probably be better off using something else. I suppose betahistine has the advantage of not causing many adverse effects. Sounds like a placebo!
Same on this side of the Irish Sea. It tends to be used when they don't know what to do with the patient - when they aren't bad enough to refer to hospital but they have to give them something.
I've been dispensing a lot of it for two decades and have yet to see any dramatic results with it.
Betahistine is approved in the uk and is available in the bnf:British National Formulary
It takes about one week to be able to stop the vertigo attacks .Its effect appears gradually..
