    Paracetamol solution?

Do any pharmacies sell reasonably priced elixirs or suspensions of paracetamol? The only things I can find are products like Calpol which are outrageously priced. Am I better off just making my own?

Many generic versions of Calpol. Would not suggest the solutions. The official one is Blackcurrant flavoured and there are proprietary banana flavoured. These are sold as Elixirs and taste foul.
Could always use quarter/half soluble tablet.

i'm sure msot palces sell their own generic versions of paracetamol suspension..boots own and the like....

but the calpol used to taste so good as a child until you hit the age of 6, and the 6+ version tasted foul! it was then i couldn't fake being ill any more for fear of having some horrible tasting medicine thrust down my throat!

is it for an adult or child? if it's for an adult, you may as well use soluble paracetamol and put up with the bitter taste, as you'd need 4 x 5ml spoonfuls of a generic 6+ suspension (normally between £2.50 and £3 for an 'own brand' 250ml bottle) to get an equivalent adult dose.
On a cautionary note, don't try to make up your own suspension - it's difficult, messy and incredibly easy to make an error. Stick to pre-prepared things.

It's for an adult. What I don't understand is why all the cheap 500ml elixirs seem to be prescription only when it's a GSL drug, yet I can buy ephedrine elixir cheaply and easily?

Paracetamol suspension in adult strength would facilitate suicide attempts. The country cannot afford liver transplants for all those using paracetamol as a suicide drug.

And the country doesn't have enough people donating healthy juicy livers in the first place !

I thought it might be due to nanny state, typical that those of us ill must be inconvenienced because of the fear of someone misusing it. I'm sure they will just drink nicotine or something anyway.

so what's stopping you using effevescent paracetamol tablets instead then?

They taste horrible and you have to wait minutes for them to break apart, a small amount of an elixir is a much more convenient option. I long for the day when you can go into the pharmacy, buy a litre of paracetamol elixir and never have to go trudging through the freezing snow back to the pharmacy when you are ill because you always have a large stock at home.
