    Estraderm TTS vs. Estraderm MX

What is the difference between Estraderm TTS and Estraderm MX, except for a slightly different composition of the matrix and the size of the patch? Are they interchangeable?

Estraderm TTS is a reservoir-type patch whereas Estraderm MX is a matrix-type patch. Clinically, the differences are not large.... but it is claimed that the rate of absorption of estradiol is somewhat more consistent from the newer matrix patch, and that local tolerability and adhesion are better.

And I expect the latter has a more secure patent.

What do you mean by that? They may have a patent but are there no other TTSs containing estradiol which might be considered equivalent?

Novartis now produce three different brands of estradiol patches: Estraderm TTS, Estraderm MX and Estradot. Estradot is their latest offering. As the name suggests, Estradot is a smaller patch. Other companies also manufacture a range of different estradiol patches eg. Evorel, which is made by Janssen-Cilag.

If estradiol patches are prescribed generically, the pharmacist can choose which brand to dispense and will be paid based on their endorsement. Many women will want to remain on the same brand - it is well worth asking what she has had before if you are unsure. Although the various brands all have somewhat different designs, they do release the same amount of estradiol per 24 hours; a script for estradiol 25mcg/24 hr transdermal patches could be filled with any of the brands mentioned above.
