i would like to know why thiazides are the firstline treatment for hypertension in african american people. sorry if to some people this might seem like a stupid question
thanks
According to NICE - either a thiazide diuretic or a calcium-channel blocker is the first line for black patients of any age (of African or Carribean descent) or other patients above the age of 55.
We were told that this is because these patients do not respond to ACE-Inhibitor monotherapy as well as younger patients of non-African or Carribean descent.
