    Question Erythromycin Absorption?

I was just wondering if anyone knows where Erythromycin is absorbed in the body. Is it absorbed in the stomach or small intestine and how how does it take to be effective for Gastroparesis? I have Erythromycin in 250 mg tablet form and I have it in liquid form. How long does each take to work and where is each absorbed? Thank you!

Erythromycin is inactivated by stomach acid, so the tablets are likely to be enteric coated. This coating prevents degradation in the stomach, so it is probably absorbed in the small intestine. As a general rule, drugs in liquid form are absorbed quicker than in a solid form.

Here is a site with details about Gastroparesis Gastroparesis Treatments, Gastroparesis Diagnosis, Gastroparesis Symptoms (I'm not suggesting you go to the US for treatment, it was just the first decent site google found).

Erythromycin presumably is to be taken for an underlying condition, rather than for the gastroparesis itself?

I'm not wishing this on you, but Erthromycin can make you feel quite bloated and nauseous itself. If it happens, probably best to persevere than stop taking it, if its a short course.

Probably best to take it half an hour before meals.
    ....just my opinion

    Hi D

Erythromycin is a treatment option for gastroparesis. It acts as a motilin receptor agonist in smooth GI muscle - which increases the rate of gastric emptying. A common dose for this purpose is 250mg three times a day. Although erythromycin appears to be more effective than metoclopramide in terms of improving gastric emptying, it may not be very effective in relieving symptoms such as nausea. Tolerance to the prokinetic effects of metoclopramide and erythromycin appears to develop relatively quickly in some patients.

It should begin to work within a couple of hours after taking the first dose. The liquid may be absorbed slightly quicker.
