    Question tramadoland sibutramine

    hi there,

just wondering if these can be taken together, gp has prescribed both for me, i'm aware certain analgesics can't be taken but unsure if tramadol is one of them

    regards, polly

Best to avoid sibutramine with drugs like aspirin or ibuprofen. Tramadol seems safe to take with sibutramine though.

thank you, checked bnf and couldn't find anything, gp never advised against, but the dispensing pharmacist said not to take together.

BNF doesn't mention anything in appendix 1. Tramadol and sibutramine can increase levels of serotonin in the brain which is probably the reason why pharmacist said not to take. Best thing is to get clarification from Stockley's (which I don't have) so can anyone on here (Pharmanaut ) sort this out ?

This combination may cause symptoms of 'excess serotonin' eg. nausea, agitation, shivering etc. Your GP could prescribe codeine instead of tramadol.

In Stockley 8th Ed there is no mention of an interaction.
