Sofradex - not recommended in BNF

I only just noticed yesterday in the BNF that Sofradex and Otosporin have that black and white symbol next to their names indicating that they are not recommended products anymore, like chloramphenical ear drops. But I have absolutely no idea why, and have seen these products around and being used for years, sofradex is still regularly requested by our ENT doctors at the hospital I work in, although I notice there is a manufacturing problem with sofradex at the moment. I know Otosporin isn't used very much anymore, I don't know why that is at either, although the having to keep it in the fridge requirement is kind of annoying. Does anybody know why?

Gentisone HC had a supply problem a few years back and sofradex was used as replacement. Reading section in BNF, fear is of fungal overgrowth. Believe framycetin can also cause allergic reactions.

It doesn't have to be kept in fridge anymore! Been like that for a while now

Cool Re: Sofradex - not recommended in BNF

it could be due to the fact that they contain aminoglycosides , which have been known to damage the tympanic membrane.... Just a thought , but it might be worth asking the manufacturers

my colleague suggested that, but neither gentisone nor gentisone hc have the not recommended symbol next to it.

    The symbol is defined as
"Less suitable for prescribing...their use may be justifiable in certain circumstances"

So not really "not recommended" - See BNF 57 page ix
