Re: Finding work in the US

Following is a post from studentdoctornetwork pharmacy forum

There has been a lot of talk about the shortage of Rphs and how that has disappeared over the last 6-12 months. In So. Cal there is in fact a surplus. So far people have correctly linked this to retired Rphs coming out of retirement, and part time women Rph's switching to full time as the recession brings the pain.

But I don't think people are aware the extent to which foreign pharmacists have had on this job market. I know the recruiter for a chain very well and she informed me that there are a fixed number of visas granted every year. In the past companies like Microsoft,Google, biotech firms, etc used to use up a lot of visa slots sponsoring their own people to work here. That left a limited supply for pharmacists.

But since the recession, those companies arent hiring anymore. This has freed up plenty of visa spots for everything else. Nurses, pharmacists, anyone who wants in but couldn't make it in the past due to competition from other fields is getting in now. The intern at my store went to a company sponsored study session for the board examination. This was for prospective Rph's from western states. Out of 130 or so people only about 25 or so went to US schools. The rest were from overseas. My friend the recruiter tells me that every store in my area will have 2 foreign grads placed there.

This is why our market is so tight right now. These foreign grads recieved a sub-par degree over seas and now they are flooding the market. My intern has over 180k in debt and he told me that most of the people he spoke to had no debt. This will not stop anytime soon, since Obama is in the tank with big business. It will only get worse. So why go to school in the US?

Do not expect to be welcomed with open arms.

Re: Finding work in the US

Could you imagine the situation in the UK when the borders are open to Europe (particularly Eastern Europe) without any visa restrictions? Of course we will face surplus....Lindsey oil refinery protests are just the beginning. are they racists? bloody no! are they xenophobic? bloody no..... they also have a family to feed! what do you expect when italian/portuguese companies sack the locals and bring in their people from Europe to do the jobs when there are enough skilled labours currently doing the job? i understand where they are coming from! i am feeling i am being forced to have this ' eurosceptic' view the same way they have the ' fed up of foreigners' feeling...for slightly different reasons.
The UK installed the australian points based system, australia managed to control the borders but the uk did not, and will not, as this points based system can't be used to restrict the movement of EU nationals/labours according to Lisbon treaty.

Something is about to happen, I do not know what, when or how bad/dangerous it will be, but the volcano is about to erupt..... whoever can't sense it is in denial

Not the pharmacists market only, you are talking about every single job in the economy..... undercutting incomes is the new measure of 'competition' to get a job! How horrible is that! To put more pressure on the working class and benefits the big employers.
up until 5 years ago, the UK had a word about 'immigration policies'. With the expand of the EU, and the join of 8 Eastern European countries things have changed dramatically! you hear the president of Hungary in the EU parliament saying ' if you do not bail us out, you will find 5 million unemployed hungarians making it all the way to your countries (youtube it).
usually, pharmacy students do a 4 years course, get a pre-reg and then start a job. the UK intake of 'international students' was needed as a huge source of income and to fill in some extra jobs present. But when you say every pharmacist from the 20 (or so) EU country can fly, register next day, not do a conversion year (OSPAP), not sit for a proper english exam, not to apply for a work permit....etc what do you expect?

Still wondering what has changed in the past 5 years? a profession that always been in shortage is no longer in shortage?Wait for Turkey to join, 80 million Turks on the streets of london.... the thought of this happening put a chill on my spine.

    Happy Raoul xx

His use of english language is very poor! tell him to learn proper english, first, before he complains about all the foreigners (at least, tell him to try). would not expect that from someone born and living in an english speaking country.

H G Wells thought that UK would be invaded by hordes of far easterners flying their own planes. Has taken place but not quite in the way he expected.

With globalisation work has emigrated to cheapest production areas, we must expect that workers will also emigrate to areas of highest wages.

This has replaced expansion by conquest which has been the way for thousands of years. Japan showed the way by producing what the customer wanted at a price the customer would pay.

You could say that fighting wars have been replaced by trade wars.
