    Moving down under

    Hi

I've been thinking about moving to Oz for a year or two and I was really hoping on continuing as a pharmacist whilst there. I've seen that I need to sit an exam and be supervised for a certain amount of time, but I was wondering what was the best way to go about this. Should I try and get sponsorship to go over there? Can you get sponsorship? I currently work in retail, so would it be too much of a leap to move over to hospital? Also how long does it all take?

I was just wondering if anyone has any tips or suggestions as I'm not sure where to start.

    Thank you

I'd google for Australian pharmacy/pharmacist forums and ask them. You may even get an offer!

When I investigated emigrating to Australia in the 60s, I found that there was a surplus of pharmacists so wasn't really wanted. However, they were very short of science teachers, so I did consider being sponsored by South Australian housing trust, but eventually decided to stay in UK. wished I had gone now.

Once again... Google to the rescue.

We have the RPSGB to thank for removing reciprocal registration due to fear of some kind of litigation against favouring Aus and NZ pharmacists.
Now we have our hospital system understaffed as there are too many hoops for them to jump through.
A lot of them used to do a stint here when they did their world tour before settling down in a career at home.
Lets hope the GPhC wise up.

    Re: Moving down under

One of my friends who is a pharmacist has just moved down under to work in Oz. It all sounded a nightmare when she was applying for it all

Firstly she had to send off papers to the society in oz from the society here to prove she is qualified. then she had to sit an english exam. yes thats right an english exam. she was born and bred in UK, yet still had to sit an english exam. You need to get certain levels depending on the type of job you are going for (skilled, unskilled etc). This english exam needed to be passed at level 7 i think. it consisted of comprehension style questions and essays i think. This had to be paid for.

Once passed you are able to work, and apply i think. as a pharmacist she then had to sit the pre reg exam over there, even though she is qualified in UK and has a clinical diploma under her belt.

Once thats all done i think you then need so long working udner supervision before you are let loose

Don't quote me on all the facts, but thats what i heard as she was going through the application process...

hope it helps and kind of fits in with whats required?!?!?

Join me in a vote of thanks to the RPSGB for abandoning reciprocal registration.
They did this in fear of being challenged by the EU.
Lets hope the GPhC has a more pragmatic approach.
