    Pre-reg abroad

    Hi all,

While reading through posts in this section, i was wondering if someone does Mpharm from Uk and goes abroad to do his pre-reg would he be accepted as Pharmacist in the UK? Or would he have to do his pre-reg again in Uk to practice as a pharmacist?

    Thank You

As far as I know, you cannot "go abroad" to do your pre-reg year..it must be completed and assessed entirely within the UK, in order to be granted the MRPharmS diploma to practice. After that, it's pretty much up to you to find out which countries will accept RPSGB membership as an access qualification without further study.

    Re: Pre-reg abroad

oh ok .. Well a Canadian friend of mine is currently studying pharmacy in Uk, since he's in his 3rd year now i asked him what his plans were after finishing his degree. he said that he will do his pre-reg in Canada, do a test and get qualified there. So that's the reason I was thinking if he would be recognised as a pharmacist in uk having done his degree?
But since he cant do his pre-reg abroad, this option is out of question?

    Re: Pre-reg abroad

I'm guessing he wants to register as a canadian pharmacist so will do their pre-reg and pass their overseas equivalency exams as well. If he wants to practise in the uk he'll either have to do an equivalency exam once he registers in canada or may possibly have to do a pre-reg year as he has a uk degree. Either way it'll be complicated for him.

So if you finish the degree in the UK, there is the option of not doing pre-reg here and applying to a different country and going through their training?

Secondly, what is the degree awarded as mpharm (hons)??

there is that option but it is dependent on the country in question and their regard for the percieved quality of the uk pharmacy degree.

When i did the MPharm course (as one of the first few bunches to do so) it wasn't an honours couse although this may have changed - check with the establisment you are applying to or with UCAS for specific info.

I don't understand why you would want to do you pre-reg abroad, its very limiting. Practically every pharmacy regulator in the world's first question will be "Are you registered or eligible for registration in the country in which you trained?"

If you do your pre-reg in a different country you will probably be stuck there for the rest of your professional life. Don't forget that you can only start you pre-reg within two years of getting your undergrad degree in most countries so unless you are sure that you will never change your mind I would do it where you started training.

Would it be a problem if it was an EU member state?

Only if you ever wanted to work in another Non-EU state eg Australia.

Thanks to the PharmSoc we now have to jump through hoops to work in Aus or NZ. Not sure why they couldn't keep the reciprocal and have EU free access.
Probably scared of having some legal test case thrown at them?
