But I read a post somewhere here that pharmacists who can prescribe medicines can earn at least 30 pounds per hour

Add to it 50% -100% of the basic salary for on calls. Few years training and they become consultants earning up to 79000- 92000 (without on call) in addition to the private work.

But only 1/3 of doctors make it to conultant level, and within their contract they have to work up to 48hrs a week, they also take at least 7 years to specialise, including f1 and F2 grades. Salary hardly huge for all that work. If a pharmacist went through as much education im sure they could earn such a salary. But our course is only 4 yrs without specilisation. An independent prescriber can demanded 50-60k with only 1 extra year.

There is a very misinformed view of doctors earning huge salaries.

The junior doctors where I work start at £45k, the locums get £45/hr and the partners get £130k as its a dispensing practice. (They don't set foot in the dispensary apart from signing hundreds of scripts before filing)
I think they work hard, but not very, its an interesting job and well done to them for choosing that career path. Some work two days a week, thats 9-11pm and then 3-5pm with 2-3 visits inbetween. The visits and any queries are met with great reluctance. One of our doctors is old school and puts in double the effort of the others but he seems a rare breed!I imagine hospital drs have a tougher time.

Locums are paid alot but their rates are starting to come down. I can tell you that doctors starting on £45k is a big acception, very few will earn that until they are in speciality training on a 50% banding. Do you work in a GP surgery. Doctors going through rotation i.e. speciality training to become a GP earn in this range, this after F1 and F2. Most junior doctors i know earn around 30k with some in speciality training earning up 60k but doing a 60hr week. Those that are partners earn this because they own part of the business. Just like being a pharmacy owner. Also i know a GP surgery with a pharmacy attached and the pharmacist is a partner in the surgey so will earn this figure.

Sorry yep i was refering to hospital doctors. However the junior doctors you refer to would have spent a few years on rotation so its not fresh grads on £45k.

Most hospital doctors can only dream of earning £130k accept consultants.

I admit though GPs are the best paid of all doctors and seem to do the least work.
Here is a sad sorry. A pharmacist who locums for us at weekends is a senior hospital pharmacist. He explained he earned as much if not more than his friends who are doctors. He is only 30. His dad was a doctor but the stress ended up killing him so he decided not follow this path. He also explains he only works 37hrs a week while his peers work at least 50, so he has a better quality of life. He loves his job to, he is on wards, lecturers, teachers pre pharmacists so there is alot of variety

    Read enough.
My advice: Forget Pharmacy. Do anything else instead. Our profession is misunderstood by everyone, nobody knows what 'to do with us' and you just feel like intruding all the time.
GP is a lovely profession, rewarding, and very well paid.

Sorry you feel that way just i dont. My friend who is a GP also hates his job, sick o seeing people with colds, thinks its majorly stressful and earns 60k for a 50hr week plus a on call once a week. However he is often at the surgey until 8pm signing scripts. Hardly this 100k a year, 9-5 pic nic and 1 patient an hour painted by people.

That fact is i love the degree and the career options nd am very happy to be doing pharmacy. I have so many options open to me. No one makes you stay in the dispensary. Make use to of your skills to provide prescribing advice etc and make a real difference to patients.

In my opinion pharmacy is also well paid, to me 40-50k is not low pay, and if u like what you are doing it will be higher.

All pharmacists are miserable because they hold an envy for other professionals. I dont. I feel unique and could not be more pleased.

As for being misunderstood as a profession. I couldnt care what people think, ingorance others is their problem. This misunderstanding also provides me with more oppurtunity.

PEOPLE WHO HATE PHARMACY, SIMPLY DONT DO IT, AND DONT PUT OTHERS DOWN, THAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH THE PROFESSION. EVERYONE IS MISERABLE AND IT IS CONTAGIOUS.

    OR CHANGE CAREER
