Re: Come! Join me for OSPAP!

Hello everyone! Long time no chat!

It has been more than half a year since I last contributed to the thread!
I've received my approval from the Society since mid 2008. But decided not to pursue the programme anymore for a couple of reasons but I will still try to share as much experience with regard to the application process.

Anyway, from what I gathered from the latest development, I suppose it's only the internship placement in community pharmacy that is affected? How about hospital placement as another option?

I've once asked myself before, what if I am refused a work permit by the Home Office even if I've completed my OSPAP? I believe having a spouse working in the UK is the easiest way to go about doing it, as you could take up any legal job as long as your other half is legally employed. Another solution (for those below 30 and originated from a commonwealth country) is to apply for a Working Holiday Pass which entitles you to spend a good 2 years in the UK with a maximum of 1 year in full time employment. With that, you are able to undergo the 52-week of pupillage training.

I hope I am making sense here. Just trying to help...I hardly log in anymore though I started this thread! For a quick reply, feel free to drop me a message in the comment box at :-

Good for you Geekay, I think sometimes people make a decision without taking into account what they are leaving behind and then regret it later, when they have invested a lot of money. Of course if you change your mind, you now know the process and so should be easier.

I am sure we would love to hear from you more on the forum and about practice in your country too. One thing I like about this forum is the international section where occasionally we do manage to get a global perspective on aspects of pharmacy practice.

    Thanks Paul

I am no longer a practising pharmacist. I am now teaching pharmaceutical science. After spending 2 years plus in education, I prefer the nature of my current job with no weekends & shift work plus long holidays though I still like the science behind the study of pharmacy. Once in a while, I still miss dispensing but not the customer service part for sure...

In Singapore/Malaysia, the late shift work ends at 10 pm, or earliest, 7-8 pm and I used to work 9 hours on weekends and public holidays too.... I dont think I like the idea of reverting back to practising in community pharmacy anymore...

I've received a couple of enquiries from some M'sian and Singaporean pharmacist. Having spent some time in both countres, I would think, it's more justifiable for someone in Malaysia to move to the UK for practice but not those in Singapore, taken into consideration the practice, the job prospect and of course, the overall quality of life in both countries...

I am joining my husband who has Work Permit and will be working in Aberdeen. I am pharmacy graduate from Pakistan (4yr degree), can I work as Pharmacy technician without any visa/work permit untill I take registration exam?

Re: Come! Join me for OSPAP!

Depending on your experiance and luck you may get a job as an assistant, but with mandatory technician registers next year and the current staff training requirements you are unlikely to get a job as a technician, although legally you could work as a pharmacy technician for a few more months, but you could probably get a job as a dispenser try local pharmacies. Pay is not great but it is experiance.

I am not sure about the work permit issue, you will have to check with the UKBIA who deal with visas and work permits as you will not be able to get a job without some sort of permit.

    Good luck

Re: Come! Join me for OSPAP!

i hav got an approval for joining OSPAP starting not later than sep 2010, that means i have two years one this year 2009, which i suppose would not be possible because most of the seats would be already filled up by this time. so practically i got a chance to try for 2010.
My question is which university would be best Aston, Brighton, Sunderland Or RGU, in terms of education, cost of living, pre reg placement as well as parttime job while doing the Course.

Any guidance in this matter shall be highly appreciated.

I would also like to network with fellow pharmacists who have got an approval for OSPAP.
