    CD Cabinets

We've received some enquiries from Pharmacists in Eire regarding the supply of CD cabinets and need to find out the specification requirements to see if ours meet their requiremsnts. Does anyone know how I can find out what the requirements are for storage of controlled drugs in Eire? The main difference seems to be that the cabinets be issued with an IS number by the local Garda?? Not sure what this is though.

Sadly, unlike photo kiosks, spec for CD cabinets are included in Irish controlled drug laws, MDA regs something or other (the PSI should be able to give you exact details). The basic problem is that the cabinet must comply with a particular Irish Standard (the IS) and be marked to that effect by the Irish standards Office, like a kitemark shows something complies with the British Standard. Sounds straightforward, except the Irish Standard has been superceded by a European Standard so it isn't possible, even in Ireland, to buy a safe with the necessary mark.
If your safe DOESN'T have the mark, which it can't have unless it is an antique, then you have to get a Garda (policeman) of at least the rank of superintendant, to visit your pharmacy, inspect the safe and certify that it is of equal or better construction than the obselete standard. This has to be done every 2 years, although your safe won't have got any less safe over that period. As you can imagine senior police officers have better things to do than examine pharmacy safes, even if they knew what they were examining them for, so lots of pharmacies have very safe illegal safes.
