Question Carousel system in dispensary any good?

    Hi,
I'm planning the layout of a new dispensary where space is limited and am considering a carousel system. I have seen them in various boots stores etc but have never actually worked with one.

Just looking for any input on pros & cons from anyone that has worked with a carousel? Do they save a lot of space compared to standard shelving?

    Thanks in advance

Carousels usually contain top 50 prescribed items. As regards space, then probably need a 2m square.

Thers's a thread for bad jokes already

If they are round won't they create alot of dead space compared to a square unit?

I don’t like them, honestly, top parts are dangerous, gave myself a bump on the head many times. But maybe it’s only me moaning.

...most customers will point out where the product is and you should just be able to hand it right over so they don't have to wait.
Also watch out for discretion when dispensing certain products if the carousel is visible to customers.
Where am I?; In the Pharmacy.
Who are you?; The new Number 2.
Who is number 1?; You are number 6.
    What do you want?;..................

Patients have to wait, few seconds more or less doesn’t really matter, I hate to act in haste. All those showing off how fast they can be while dispensing – go to hell.

I hate them! Stock invariably gets damaged, boxes crushed. Also you cannot see what stock you have at a glance, too much messing about opening & closing the darn things. What's wrong with open shelves?

Well you, me and several other dispensers I know. Worst thing is when a colleague spins it just as you have opened a drawer. Having said that, the "galley" format drawers in the Pharmacies of the same chain are not much better. I had a colleague who would open the drawers while I was crouched down getting an item from the bottom drawer, and forget to close it resulting on bumps to the head.

Personally, I am not a fan of face-to-face dispensing. I wouldn't mind being "on the front" if I didnt have to dispense at the same time. I would rather concentrate on the customer service when taking in and handing out prescriptions, rather than worrying about the backlog in front of me!

Maybe thats why I'm best doing Care Homes!

I used one at BTC Milton Keynes. Only rarely necessary to pull out section. Mechanism often faulty. Very convenient for the addict who dived into the dispensary, grabbed a few packs of Zopiclone and out again in a flash. After that, no CD items on carousel. Scripts had to be passed to the back.
