Studying an MPharm after BSc Chemistry

    Hi everyone,

I've just completed a BSc in Chemistry and wish to persue a career in pharmacy. I'm classed as an ELQ student for fees purposes in England but does anyone know the situation in Wales/Scotland? Also why is pharmacy the only healthcare undergraduate course subject to ELQ fees? Is there a need for more pharmacy graduates in the workforce? Should I look towards a career in medicine?...

Personally I would try medicine or veterinary science then dentistry then ophthalmics.
If all those drop through then re-group and re-think.
There are many reasons why you should chose pharmacy, but for me they are countered by the way the profession is being shunted by the commercial world

We are doing ever more with even less each day.
Where am I?; In the Pharmacy.
Who are you?; The new Number 2.
Who is number 1?; You are number 6.
    What do you want?;..................

That seems to be what I'm hearing from all angles. I'd hate to go into a career such as medicine for all the wrong reasons though..

Is it really that bad though? When compared to other careers.. Jobs are scarce in most fields as it is.

Melamine do you like operating tills, answering telephones, putting orders away, and getting zero respect from the Public? If the answer is yes to all of the above, then by all means do Pharmacy. All of the above I have to do quite regularly.

If on the other hand you would like a career where you have receptionists to deal with queries, set appointments throughout your day, no tills to operate and a great deal of respect from the public then do Medicine or Dentistry.

I would go into medicine or dentistry - DO NOT do pharmacy!
It isn't what it was and most people want to get out or have become (like me) disllusioned with the job.
    i.e p***** off
    Please please take my advice!!
If you must do a pharmacy degree try to get a job in industry.

Pharmacy is a fantastic degree which equips it's holder to do an immense number of professionally and financially fulfilling career options. Like most of life, it is what you make of it but there is huge opportunity. As a chemistry graduate you shouldn't find the course unduly demanding and whilst you may have to be prepared to change career a few times within the profession, the experience will never be lost on you.

I registerd on 1st August 1978 and whilst I would be lying to say it has always been easy, I have had a wonderful time so would unreservedly recommend it to you.

My goodness. What a load of doom mongers we have in this post.

If you don't like pharmacy then go do something else. Standing on a soap box and telling people not to go into it because you 'have to put an order away and use a till' is laughable to say the least. It's lazy people like you, that believe you're above doing the more mundane jobs, that gives pharmacists a bad name. And the statement 'most people want to get out...' is just an over dramatic generalisation that belongs in the school yard, not on a professional forum. Maybe you and your friends want to get out and, to be honest, I wish people like you would shut up moaning and just go, give us all a break.

The times I come across pharmacies where the previous days locum sat on his/her arse all day, texting, talking on the phone and generally not doing anything, is the main reason for the lack of respect an individual pharmacist gets. I for one am well respected and highly thought of where-ever I work, whether it be for the day or a week. It is all down to your own attitude and commitment to the job. You want respect, then earn it. If you honestly believe it is a given right just because you're a pharmacist then you are sadly mistaken. Giving good advice and actually working, (which means if you have no scripts and there is an order to put away, put the bloody order away instead of standing there with your phone glued to your head), along with treating staff and the company you're working for with respect will go a long way to earning the respect you so desperately crave.

I for one love being a pharmacist. I love having the knowledge that my lecturers bestowed upon me. I love using that knowledge to help people. I love not being out of work. I love seeing the gratitude in people's faces when they return to me and thank me for the advice I gave and that it really made a difference to their life. I too would strongly recommend pharmacy as a profession.

    Yes STC - Stephen.
It would be better if the control of Pharmacy was back with Pharmacists. I'm sure you will agree with that.

And while there are some locums who do just as you as you say, there still more than a few of us with a "get in there and get the job done" attitude with 'old school' values, just like yourself.
Mobile phone : switched off; personal issues left outside the door.
If it gets quiet (very unusual) find something of value to do.
