    How low can you go?

What do you guys think about the advert in situations wanted in the P.J. 12th March 2011, p318?

An experienced community locum is looking for work at £12 per hour (this is not a typo - people I know have checked this out).

Looks like locums and community employed pharmacists are going to have to take a big cut in salery if this catches on.

    Anyone care to undercut this?

I have 2 children to pay Childcare for. I guess I am better extending my maternity leave at those rates!

Must be an average pharmacist or in an area with too many pharmacists/not enough branches.

As I always say - vocational pharmacists get nowhere in pharmacy these days.

now if this person is looking to undercut, they would ask for maybe £17-19 but £12 (halving), there must be a back story to this. If you were a locum recruiter for a multiple/independent would you contact this person?

I have always had the feeling it could come down to this. Locum pharmacists are self-employed, If there is little or no work available, they must do what any other self-employed contractor in any discipline would do...cut their rates. £12 per hour is a whole lot better than nothing at all, and given the current financial climate, I am not one bit surprised. The UK has been swamped with EU pharmacists recently, not only from eastern Europe, but notably from Ireland.
Pharmacy in Ireland is in turmoil. Pre-reg pharmacists are working for no pay just to gain their society membership. There are no pre-reg positions available in hospitals anywhere, because the Health Service Executive (NHS 'equivalent') have introduced a no-recruitment policy in order to save money. Most newly-qualified pharmacists from Ireland don't have a snowball's chance in hell of securing employment here, so many have gone to the UK to seek work.

They often have huge bank loans to pay off, so I am inclined to believe UK locum rates will go into free-fall...some of these guys would work for a sandwich in order to get their foot in the door. Believe me..I have an ever-increasing pile of newly-qualified CVs, currently a foot thick.

Crazy I know, but true, and these guys are NOT monkeys.....

Re: How low can you go?

i have only done around 25 days of locuming on the top of my full time job over the last 5 months. i turned down work on a lot of occasions, the least i accepted was 23quid/hour, the highest was 32 quid/hour + 2 hours for travelling time as an emergency. i could work 6 days a week and find locum work within maximum 45 mins drive if i wanted. obviously it differs from an area to another and i am in a position to pick and choose as i am not a full time locum.
just thought i tell you something encouraging, its not bad everywhere and plenty of work is available in some places. be positive

Re: How low can you go?

I've heard of reports of one newly qualified in NI working for free (essentially working as an extra dispenser) in the hope that the experience will help secure a full time, when one does come up. Strange logic, but shows you how bad things are!
