Thumbs down Repeat prescription service incentives

Tesco's are offering 250 club card points if a patient signs up for their repeat prescription service. The old rule about not attaching incentives to prescription services has been removed from the MEP.

Free Benecol with your statin prescription next??

Is that so. I might start offering 250 pennies never mind clubcard points, if that's the case. On the first anniversary, of course, and I would pay the money over during the MUR.

Free condoms with your viagra, anyone?
    ....just my opinion

Good idea DavidS but not quite good enough. Clubcard points are worth 1p each in cash (or 4p each if you use them to buy certain special offers) and they are credited immediately so nobody is going to wait a year for the same amount.

I must suggest to Tesco next time I locum for them that they consider giving club card points to patients who have an MUR. At 100 points it would be well worth it!

Condoms with Viagra. Hmm. No, I don't think so but some sort of inducement might be worth while.

I'm still waiting to find out what the various large multiples are going to quote as their targets for emergency supplies. "Get an emergency supply from us and win 100 nectar points" - has a certain ring don't you think?

You mean PAY for an emergency supply from us! Too many people expect loans - something which the multiples are cracking down on.

According to Connecting for Health this contravenes the NHS Pharmaceutical Services Regulations.

Principle 2 – Dispensing contractors must not offer any type of inducement to encourage patients
    to nominate them
Dispensers and dispensing staff shall not give or offer any gift or reward to encourage a patient to
nominate them; this also includes the offering of share dividends of profits, discounts and loyalty points.
This is supported by the Dispensing Contractor’s Terms of Service which underpin this principle. NHS
Pharmaceutical Service Regulations 2005, prohibit pharmacists or their staff from offering inducements to
    encourage patients to nominate them.

No doubt that someone at Tesco Head Office has boobed over that.
Report it to PSNC ASAP if you have a copy of the leaflet or incentive.

I think the current inducement is a good deal more ancient than clubcard points!
