    dessicating agent

On a pseudo-pharmacy related topic, does anyone know of a good dessicating agent to weather-proof books and papers stored in a cold shed? What is it called and where can I get it? What else is paper sensitive to?

One of you chemical-heads must know ...

Buy some of the vacuum bags sold to store clothing. Get some silica gel (Contained in dehumidifying products for caravans etc in most DIY stores).
Books plus silica gel in bag and use vacuum cleaner to suck out air. Tape end securely.

Sounds like the best option to me.
Be careful you don't knock the bags about and make a pin-hole in them.

If there is a low volume of paper - why not scan it, put on a CD and make a few electronic copies?
The books - well I can undertand you wanting to keep those, so would go for the vacuum bag/silica gel option.

Thanks for that guys. Was thinking of using plastic storage boxes but the vacuum bags sound a better option.

    Thanks again

My family and I move frequently and I have started packing our books and electronics with Silica Gel after losing hundreds of dollars worth of stuff to moisture damage. There was no overt water damage, things just got damper than was good for them. Since that tragic move I have used Silica Gel and haven't had any water-related damage since (I wish it also protected against damage from drops and rough handling!). I would say that using Silica Gel in the method described above would work brilliantly. I got mine from Desiccant Products to Prevent Moisture Damage! .

I think that might make the paper rather greasy? :-)

How could silica gel make paper greasy? Standard desiccant used in hundreds of products.
Also in babies nappies. (Mistaken for glass by anxious mothers).
