linctus or elixir or liquid or syrup or suspension

Any one got any official definitions of each of the above?

Just for interest more than anything?

Also has anyone got a list of the Latin directions and there meanings? We've got a girl training to be a dispenser and she's asking me what they all mean and my knowledge on the old Latin is nearly exhausted.

    Cheers

Try the appendices of Pharmaceutical Compounding and Dispensing (Pharmaceutical Press)
British Pharmacopoeia could also be useful.

I was brought up on Latin.
HSS (Hora sum sumendis) at the hour of sleep.
SOS (si opus sit) When necessary.
Cannot vouch for correct spelling after all these years.

don't mix qd up with qid or qds.
    qd : quaque die
qds, qid : four times a day.

usually obvious from the drug prescribed in community, not so in hospital.
Where am I?; In the Pharmacy.
Who are you?; The new Number 2.

I may be wrong but I have entered in red what I have always thought them to mean.

    Yep, agree with this

    Linctus
a syrupy or sticky preparation containing medicaments exerting a local action on the mucous membrane of the throat

Liquid preparation for the treatment of cough

    elixir
a sweetened liquid usually containing alcohol that is used in medication either for its medicinal ingredients or as a flavoring

A possibly flavoured mixture of alcohol, syrup and water used as a medicinal base

    Oral suspension
a suspension consisting of undissolved particles of one or more medicinal agents mixed with a liquid vehicle for oral administration <nystatin powder for oral suspension>

A biphasic liquid preparation. One phase will be aqueous and the other either solid or liquid

    Liquid
1 : flowing freely like water
2 : having the properties of a liquid : being neither solid nor gaseous
3 a : shining and clear <large liquid eyes> b : being musical and free of harshness in sound c : smooth and unconstrained in movement d : articulated without friction and capable of being prolonged like a vowel <a liquid consonant>

    Syrup
: a thick sticky liquid consisting of a concentrated solution of sugar and water with or without the addition of a flavoring agent or medicinal substance <syrup of codeine>

Mixture of 2/3 sucrose and 1/3 water
    I would also add:
    Emulsion
:A mixture of two immiscible liquids prevented from separating by the use of one or more stabilising substances. (May be for internal or external use)

Just thought I'd add my two pennorth.

Cream in milk is oil in water, butter is water in oil.
