Re: Are UniChem rationing stock?
sorry - neat vodka over crushed ice is my favourite drink. A good vodka should leave a smooth texture in the mouth and peppery aftertaste when sipped neat. Those who shoot it down in one miss out on a wonderful, almost savoury taste.
An ideal accompaniment is a pickled gherkin, in the Russian fashion.
Good vodkas in the uk (for sipping) include Russian Standard (the new one they import from St. Petersburg), Smirnoff Black label (the other stuff is absolute muck), polstar (polish but tasty), Chekhov (rare to see but sometimes used as a cheapo house vodka in nightclubs - however russian-made and excellent quality) and swedish absolut.
If you're just buying vodka to chuck in coke or other drinks then get the cheapest supermarket own-brand as the taste of the impurities are covered up by your mixer.
The latest trend in St Petersburg is to have vodka with gold leaf mixed into a champagne cocktail! A bit too fancy for my tastes....
