Default Does It Make a Difference

Hi guys, ive not been on the forum for a long time now but have just got my A-Level results today. I got ABB. I wanted to go to a research based university like The University of Nottingham to study Pharmacy but fell short of the high AAB they offered me. Instead ive ended up at Liverpool John Moore University. I want to go into hospital pharmacy, and perhaps community in the future and was just wandering wether or not my job prospects are lowered solely becayse of the university i obtained the MPharm degree from..your views would be appreciated

No chance mate!! All you need is a degree in pharmacy to practice as a pharmacist. I have never once been asked which university I attended or even what class of degree I got.

Although according to the Tory's you should have packed up and headed south!

yeah again it won't matter. Nottingham are the best but all you need is that degree.

And OP - the key to success after you graduate will be how you present yourself and what experience you've gotten yourself whilst doing your degree. Obviously pharmacy experience during the holidays is great but don't limit all your activities whilst you're at uni to pharmacy. If you enjoy sport for example, being part of a uni squad shows commitment and teamwork. Volunteering shows off your communication skills, desire to help people and also teamwork.

Yeah, your University reputation makes no difference unless you want to go into academia/industry when you graduate. Even then, it's not a barrier, you'll just have to try harder.

Just aim to get a minimum of a 2.1, a couple of summers pharmacy experience and some team-work stuff (societies) and you'll be well placed to get the pre-reg of your choice when you graduate.

Couldn't you get a better place with those grades?

I went there and defenitely would not choose to do so again.

Yes..you don't "end up" anywhere yet at this stage..Make a few calls to other schools.. I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised. Also, some of the best times you will have as a student, will be based on travel, often to BPSA events at locations other than your own base.

We've all had fun...now it's your turn!! (Does my jealousy show?)...The posts above are 100% correct in that the class of degree you obtain only really matters if YOU want it to!

Best of luck mrmeshi!

Don't pick on JMU! I'm there at the moment, okay so its probably not the greatest University but my thinking is that its not the Uni that counts or the class of degree its what you do with it. There are actually some good hospitals around Liverpool - Alder Hey specialist childrens hospital, the cardiothoracics centre at Broadgreen, and two generals - Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen UHT and the Aintree & Fazakerly UHT as well as Arrowe Park / Clatterbridge on the Wirral. I've just been working for North Cheshire HT this summer, which has been good experience and has swayed me into hospital pharmacy.

Also, Liverpool is up and coming - THE highlight of the upcoming academic year is the 67th BPSA Annual Conference is to be held at JMU next Easter!! We also have 3 of the BPSA executive members studying at LJMU, and a lot of support from the academic staff - if you do make the decision to go there look out for the Roadshow during Freshers Week.

Admin...when did you go to LJMU? And out of all the schools that are in clearing (University of Bradford, University of Central Lancashire, Hertfordshire, Keele, Medway School of Pharmacy, Portsmouth, Wolverhampton and LJMU, i think LJMU is probably the best in the basket) I rang aston, they said that it will be highly unlikely that they will be able to take me on but took down my details, Cardiff Nottingham and Manchester all said that the course is chock a block.

At the end of the day...ive discussed this with my dad...you cant rely on a schools reputation for quality of teaching or degree of research to get your 1st can you...unless you dont put the work in yourself and just rely on a schools ranking in the pharmacy tables to get your 1st....it aint gonna happen is it...i bet people have come out of LJMU with a 1st in MPharm
