Loans are not charged although some pharmacies take an NHS charge and refund when script brought in. Charged supply is Emergency Supply. Faxing to surgery basically a 'frightener', however surgery may want to know pt npt managing meds. A loan could also trigger an MUR.

I don't see a problem with dispensing the script as it was described.

I know this is an old post ... but I don't understand why it would be okay to dispense the ibuprofen gel? It's prescribed on a prescription for the child. Therefore if you dispense it for the child you're technically dispensing something that isn't clinically appropriate for the patient? You can't dispense it under the mother's name as you don't have a prescription for her?

Of course the easiest thing would be to get the mother to buy it OTC ... but maybe you could explain to me why it's okay to dispense from the prescription? Thank you.

I got married in Scotland - is that a good enough reason?
    It rains a lot.
The roads on Mull can be quite hairy when driven at high speed at night.
I had an "off" on one of the forest stages.
They (and the Irish) have better folk songs than the English.

    Anyone else like to contribute?

Whose best interests are you serving by refusing to dispense the script?
The mothers? No - it's apparently clinically indicated.
The pharmacies? No you'll almost certainly get paid for it.
The childs? They wont be using it.
The NHS? It would be free however it was written.
The Environment? With another piece of paper?
    The GP's? How?
    Yours own? - How?

Whose best interest are you serving if you dispense the script?
The mother who gets the medicine that is indicated
The pharmacy that gets the payment for the script
The GP that has better things to do
The NHS that has less of its time wasted

I still fail to see a problem

    Thanks Jeff.
What would you do about labelling the ibuprofen gel?
And how would you go about endorsing?
Would your answer be different if the item in question was a POM?

As instructed on the prescription "To be used by the mother" but with the childs name (as on the prescription)

with the size and make given.

Good question - would have a problem if it was a CD - and would probably phone the NPA for advice. Oh it was a weekend script wasn't it? Would phone the OOH service, fax them a copy of the original and ask if they'd do a new one for the mother.

    21 amoxicilliin 250mg 1 tds - still not a problem for me.

100 tarcolimus - would confirm payment with the PPA before dispensing.

I wouldnt supply the gel. Its a redicul-arse situation!! The doctor should have known not to write an item for the mother on her childs script - Idiot

Or any other item intended for the mother.

If it is not clinically inappropriate for the child and written on the childs script, no chance!!!!

Our friends at the stat com would have your balls on a plate for something like that.

Very common in the old days before exemtions for payments introduced. Scripts for cough syrups and worm medicines (Antepar in those days) were often for the whole family with different dosages.

Speaking of worm medicines, we used to dispense capsules of carbon tetrachloride and extract of male fern (dryopteris felix mas).

For acting in the best interests of the patient - they are welcome to try.

They wouldnt be able to get a case together for prosecution anyway, as long as the right people (mother) are informed of the situation. and the item being dispensed is of low value so they wouldnt bother anyway, also the doctor might need to be included in the enquiry, now, no one wants to waste the doctor's precious time, do they.
